Happy birthday to Max Klinger (1857–1920)! His fantastical engraving “The Plague” shows a nun using her rosary to fend off Death, depicted as a flock of black crows. Her patients pray and cry out in despair as two additional crows, perched on a patient’s bed, wait to claim another victim. What do you think Klinger is commenting on through this etching?

Plague? Nuns? Ravens? Rosaries used as weapons? This etching may be my Perfect Storm.
